Excavation contractors in Gaines Township work south of Kentwood, with Byron Township to the west and Caledonia to the east. The township covers about 35.7 square miles at roughly 817 feet, higher than most of the Grand River valley, and grew from 25,146 residents in 2010 to 28,812 in 2020. Communities include Dutton, first settled in 1870, and part of Cutlerville.
Growth means site work
New subdivisions and homes keep site prep busy: foundation digs, utility trenches, driveways and grading. On newer lots, grading done right at the start prevents wet basements later.
Loamy till
Much of the upland in this part of Kent County is loamy till with moderately low permeability and a seasonal water table in fall and spring. Footing drains, downspout lines and positive grading matter.
Typical Gaines jobs
- Foundation digs for new homes
- Regrading and French drains
- Driveway bases
- Service line trenches
Early history
Gaines was first settled in 1837, named in 1846 and established in 1848. In 1866 the Cody brothers built a steam-powered grist mill and sawmill, and the spot became known as Cody's Mills. Older farmhouses and outbuildings still dot the township.
Highways and access
Gaines lies just south of Kentwood with easy access to M-6, which helps get trucks to and from job sites efficiently. On small residential jobs, we time truck trips to avoid school hours on local roads. For new home sites, we stockpile topsoil at the start and spread it back at finish grade, which saves the cost of importing topsoil later.
