Sand, Till and Snow: Digging in West Michigan
Excavation Contractors Grand Rapids digs for homeowners, landowners and small builders in the city and across Kent and Ottawa counties. Our work covers foundation and basement digs, septic system excavation, yard grading and drainage, gravel driveways and culverts, utility service line trenches, and lot clearing and teardowns.
West Michigan ground changes block to block. Some lots sit on deep, fast-draining sand left by glacial meltwater and wind. Others sit on loamy glacial till with more clay, where a seasonal water table can rise to within a couple of feet of the surface from fall through spring. Sand caves; till holds water. Knowing which one you have decides how we dig, how we shore a trench, and how a septic field or drain will work.
How we work
- Every project starts with a visit to the property, not a phone guess.
- We place a MISS DIG 811 locate request and do not dig before the start time on the ticket.
- Within 500 feet of a lake or stream, we check soil erosion permit requirements first.
- Trenches in sand are sloped or boxed; trenches in till are dewatered when needed.
- Quotes list digging, hauling, stone, backfill and restoration as separate lines.
